Safe power distribution for voltages up to DC 400 V

Higher voltages for the active technology supply in the telecommunication technology area have been discussed for years. While existing systems are normally not retrofitted due to the high costs involved, this option is quite popular for newly built control rooms and data centres.

Compact power distribution systems for maximum system availability in the telecommunications technology

The current carrying capacity of cables in DC 48 V-supplied systems often requires cable cross sections of 95 mm² or more due to the power consumption of the loads. Cable cross sections can be significantly reduced with DC 400 V, which reduces the amount of copper required in the cable and saves money. However, the use of smaller cable cross-sections also offers benefits in terms of system design and service. It is easier to lay the cables and they require less space for cable routing through smaller bending radii. This leads to cost-savings and even lower rents for infrastructure space. But one aspect must always take centre stage: safety.

To ensure that the power architecture and its sub-distribution units in the IT racks function safely in DC 400 V applications, no floating wired DIN rails can be used. Enclosed systems protected against brush contact with circuit breakers and connectors specifically designed for this voltage range are required here. The “PDB-HVDC-Dxx-X” Power-D-Box is perfectly designed for this operation area. The redundant system can accommodate up to 2 x 4 pluggable, double pole 8345 circuit breakers and protect loads up to 25 A. These magnetic-hydraulic circuit breakers ensure reliable and temperature-independent tripping, even if the cooling in the IT rack fails. The mechanically coded supply connectors prevent the power supply from being inadvertently swapped. SAF-D-GRID® connectors are available for the load outputs. Their enclosures suppress arcs in case the connector is plugged or removed under voltage. Several ground terminals complete the system and enable e.g integration of an insulation sensor into the application. In this service scope, the Power-D-Box is the perfect solution for DC 400 V applications in the telecommunications technology.
